IV Medication Administration

1. Verify the medication ordered by the prescribing practitioner.
2. Perform hand hygiene and apply gloves.
3. Verify the five rights of medication administration: right patient, right drug, right dose, right time, and right route.  Also, be sure to document correctly.
4. Verify the correct patient using two identifiers.
5. Connect and flush the prescribed IV solution through the tubing system.
6. Place the IV infusion in the infusion device/IV pump.
7. Determine the correct flow rate using the manual mathematic calculation method, using an electronic device, or using both methods.
