Introduction
Medication administration is a large part of the nursing profession. It involves the client’s health, healing and safety. As the nurse, you are “responsible for evaluating the effects of the medications on the client’s health status, teaching clients about their medications and their side effects, ensuring the adherence with the medication regimen, and evaluating client technique when the client administers medications that are not given by mouth” (Potter & Perry, 2005, p. 882).
In this module, you will have access to the www.medadmin.weebly.com website to explore, engage and interact with fellow nursing students on the various activities of IM and IV medication administration. Use this site to help you review how to administer medications given via these routes. First, review medication safety and the dangers of medication errors. Then, look up how to administer IM and IV medications. Test your retention with the Medication Calculation Test and Jeopardy game. During the entire learning unit, use the blog to communicate your comments, questions and ideas with fellow nursing students and the instructor.
Unit Learning Objectives
At the end of the learning activities and units, students will:
1.Describe and discuss how to safely administer IM and IV medications.
2.Identify and discuss how to safely administer medications using the five medication rights.
3.Formulate ideas about issues that contribute to medication errors and how to safely administer medications through blogging discussions.
4.Evaluate and discuss the digital stories, videos and articles on IM and IV medication administration.

Learning Guide The Medication Administration Learning Unit is designed to educate as well as encourage the nursing student to be aware of the responsibilities of safely administering IM and IV medications. In our profession, our clients entrusts their lives to us in hopes that we bring them to quick and peaceful healing. Therefore, as a favor to your patients and yourself, truly challenge yourself to engage in the content and discussions presented in this unit. Use the resources that are given: website, blog, digital stories, games, and videos. Explore and share other resources that you may have found helpful. Use the blogs to interact with fellow students to discuss ideas, comments or concerns. Test your retention of the material by completing the medication calculations test with a 90% or greater pass rate and challenging yourself to the Jeopardy game. Finally, after the learning unit has been completed, take the Technology Evaluation Survey. The survey is to test the effectiveness of the technologies used in the learning unit.
The Learning Activities in the next section will guide you through your detailed assignments on a weekly basis. Good luck and have fun exploring!
Learning Activities Week 1: Explore the Medication Administration website. Read the following pages: Medication Safety, Additional Safety Measures, and Commonly Used Abbreviations. View the video(s) on the Dangers of Medication Errors. Read the article on the blog page and respond to the blog about medication safety and errors. Week 2: Read the page on IV Medication Administration. Review how to do medication calculations. For review on how to calculate medications, do the practice calculations on Medication Calculation Practice page. View the pictures on IV medication administration, and respond to the blog questions. Week 3: Review the background on IM Medications and IM Medication Administration. Read the article on the IM Medications Blog page, and respond to the questions. Week 4: Complete the Medication Calculations Test, Jeopardy Game and the Technology Evaluation Survey.
Evaluation Tools The Medication Calculations Test is required for the comprehensive learning of safely administering IM and IV medications. Therefore, a grade of 90% or greater is required for passing. The Jeopardy Game is also another tool for evaluating the comprehension of students on medication administration. The game is an interactive and fun way for students to learn and challenge themselves.See the grading system for how this will be graded; it will be graded on a traditional number grade system. Lastly, to examine in effectiveness of the learning unit, students will complete a Technology Evaluation Survey to identify strengths and weaknesses of the learning unit as a whole. The survey is not part of the grade of the student, but completion is required as well. It is vital for students to identify what technologies helped in their understanding of the material as well as ones that did not. Results will assist in alterations of this learning unit for future nursing students. Grading System
